GZAGA 2010 National Player of the Year (final score of 85) is Delta Chapter Founding Father, Manny Corral.

Dear Brothers,

I am writing to thank all the Brothers who participated in the GZAGA 6^th Annual 2010 National Golf Tournament on September 10, 2010 at Sterling Hills Golf Club – Camarillo, CA. I am proud to announce that this year’s National Golf Tournament was the most competitive to date, with the largest field of participants (59 Brothers), representing the most Gamma Zeta Alpha Fraternity Chapters (10), featuring the most sponsors, contests, and challenges ever.  It was through everyone’s concerted efforts and participation that our 2010 National Golf Tournament was the most successful to date.

The GZAGA 2010 National Player of the Year and the winner of the “El Campeon” Trophy with a final round score of 85 is Gamma Zeta Alpha Delta Chapter Founding Father, Manny Corral.  Manny played in a highly competitive foursome and outlasted brothers Jose Rodriguez (Alpha Beta) 2010 Chico Alumni Golf Champion, Albert Cuevas (Delta FF, 2 time Golf Champion), and GZAGA 2010 Putting Contest Champion, Javier Martin (Gamma Nu), Manny also had to survive late championship runs from Jesse Ojeda (Delta FF), and 2010 GZAGA National Rookie of the Year Jose Mayorquin (Gamma Gamma).

This is Manny’s second golf championship as he was our inaugural champion in 2005 at Elkin’s Ranch Golf Course.  Manny Corral’s round of 85 also marks the best score ever at the GZAGA National Golf Tournament.  Manny’s rededication to the sport paid off, as he broke away from the pack at hole 16, where he attempted to make an eagle on a difficult 436 yard, par 5 and birdied the hole. He bested the field by a total of 4 strokes, the largest margin of victory ever.

Besides crowning our National Champion, the GZAGA 2010 National Golf Tournament also features various contests and challenges within.  The following are the winners of the challenges respectively: Javier Martin (Gamma Nu) Putting Contest Champion, Jorge Avila (Alpha Gamma) Longest Drive Hole #18, Mauricio Salazar (Rho FF) Straightest Drive Hole #5,  Eddie Sandoval (Eta Zeta) Closest to the Pin Hole #3, Leonardo Lopez Jr. (Delta Alpha) Closest to the Pin Hole #8, Sidney Flores (Delta Xi) Closest to the Pin Hole #11, Mark de la Torre (Delta Rho), Closest to the Pin Hole #15.

In addition to the contests, the GZAGA 2010 National Golf Tournament also serves to award the best newcomer, the best returning player, the player with the most integrity and the most fashionable brother.  The following are the winners of these awards respectively:  2010 Rookie of the Year Jose Mayorquin (Gamma Gamma), 2010 Most Improved Player Sidney Flores (Delta Xi), 2010 Honesty Award Adrian Cid Uribe (Eta Alpha), and the highly coveted 2010 Best Dressed Award Gabriel Pulgarin (Delta FF).

I also want to thank Leo Cortez (Beta FF) who did an outstanding job as our 2010 Grand Marshal.  With Leo’s help we doubled the number of participating chapters from 5 to 10 and we had a 70 per cent increase in Gamma Golfers.  Next year’s Grand Marshal, as announced at the awards ceremony, will be Joel Pulgarin Jr. (Delta FF). As per our tradition, the Grand Marshals’ responsibilities are to pick the next National Golf Tournament Date as well as to serve as a GZAGA Ambassador.

For the first time ever, we had participants from Berkeley, Stanford, Sacramento, UC Davis, CSULA and USC.  A special Promoter of the Year award was handed out to Eddie De La Riva (Eta FF), for assistance in increasing the UCLA participation from 1 brother in 2009 to 8 in 2010.

Finally, I want to give special thanks to our GZAGA Communications and Logistics Director, A.K.A. the GOLFINATOR Jose Corral (Delta FF) for his unwavering spirit and for being the link from the Brothers to GZAGA.

In 2011, GZAGA promises to continue our efforts in giving our fraternity premier and exemplary golfing events filled with organizational pride that unite our brotherhood.  Hopefully, with your continued support, the GZAGA National Golf Tournament can continue to succeed and grow as we strive for our eventual goal to have representation from every Gamma Zeta Alpha Chapter.
